Meet the stars of this show, Doc and Dan. On Monday afternoon we took a lovely carriage ride on Mr. Rockefellers carriage roads! We opted for the three bridges tour.

Our guide, Mason, has made a career of driving carriage rides – summer here, spring & fall in Savannah, Georgia. Who knew such a career path even existed?!

These large rock chunks along the edge of the road are called “Mr Rockefellers Teeth”! It seems he wanted jagged, rough hewn rocks so they looked more ‘natural’. When he couldn’t get the stone masons to understand he stormed off, fell, and shattered his porcelain teeth. He returned with the broken teeth and told the masons THAT was what he wanted. 🤣

Rockefeller did not want any signage on his 57 miles of carriage trails. The police did, as people kept getting lost. This is the “grand compromise”. Note there is no info on mileage, so which way do you pick for Jordan Pond?

This was the very first bridge built – an absolutely beautiful cobblestone bridge with rocks from Jordan pond! It is also the only cobblestone bridge as they ran out of appropriate sized rocks.

Striking up a conversation with our companions we learned that they were from Nevada and Idaho. And very sadly -they did NOT drive here. The universe is *clearly* taunting me at this point. What three states do I still need to complete the map for this trip? Nevada, Idaho, and Hawaii. Sigh.

Rockefeller despised motor vehicles and banned them on all carriage roads. A series of gates & gatehouses was built to keep them out. This gorgeous gatehouse brickwork is styled like the Schoodic Institute building!

So there was an article in the Bangor Daily News this week. In it we learned that Acadia National Park has SO many ankle injuries that staff at the MDI ER refer to it as Acadia Ankle!

And thanks to my broken ankle we now we have our very own “handywrapper”, as my Cousin Larry calls it! At least parking will be easier around Mount Desert island!
