We went to the Maine Granite Museum on the recommendation of docents at the Schoodic Institute. Amazing place! Steve Haynes has been collecting tools, rocks, and the history of the granite industry as well as stories from (and OF) the people who worked in it since he was a young boy. His knowledge is deep, encompassing the geology and the history of Mount Desert Island and its surroundings.

The passion he has for granite & granite artisans totally enlivens this small museum! And it is contagious! I now see rocks in a totally new way.

So much so that I bought a rock tumbler and am tumbling granite – both smooth river rocks and rough stones – plus attempting to identify them! This is another post that will be updated all season.

Very cool! I was very into rocks when I was a middle schooler. I also had a rock tumbler. Enjoy your new toy!
