Our wonderful guide (Peter) picked us up at 9 for a private tour of Campobello Island!

First up we crossed the Roosevelt bridge handed him our passports and went thru Canadian customs. Then it was time to view the lighthouse we had see across the bay from Lubec yesterday! Mulholland light!

Then we hurried across the island to view East Quoddy light, also known as the Head Harbor Light!

At low tide you can walk across to the lighthouse but the path is slippery, steep & treacherous so we opted not to! Instead we took easy trails to other viewpoints of the lighthouse.

Peter took us all around the island, the vistas were incredible! As were his stories. There are two smallish islands in the bay called the Wolf islands. According to Indian lore two wolves were chasing a deer and a moose but god wanted the moose and deer to escape so he turned the wolves to rock

At one stop we could hear howling in the distance. With the binoculars we could see big old harbor seals sunning on rock islands in the bay!

Young Franklin Roosevelt’s parents were among those who summered at Campobello’s hotels and who purchased land and built a cottage. With his parents, he spent many enjoyable summers on this small Canadian island in the Bay of Fundy. His parents, and later he, his wife Eleanor, and their children were attracted to Campobello Island for the ample opportunities for outdoor recreation.
As a young father, FDR found that his family enjoyed Campobello and it became customary to spend July, August, and part of September there. Over the summers, the energetic, athletic father taught his children sailing and many other pastimes he had learned there during his childhood. Campobello became as much a part of the lives of his family as it had been of his.
Their “cottage” was a 37 room mansion complete with servants quarters!

And it had wonderful water views, & wide back porches to make the most of them!
When he dropped us back at Sunset Point RV park we saw seals swimming behind our camper again! So that was cool, and now I’ve got two loads of laundry in the dryer… proving that real life intrudes on even the most perfect vacations. 😊
Very cool! And yes, laundry and grocery shopping while on vacation. Blech.
