The heavy rain bands of the remains of Hurricane Debby struck Virginia Friday August 9th as a tropical storm. We didn’t think much about it as our home is ~120 feet above the Mechums river. Apparently we had over 11″ of rain that night, the upstream runoff of which caused the river to come out of its banks by about 120 feet, inundating over 1/2 of our lower meadow! It flattened the 8 foot tall wingstem, thistles, milkweeds and deposited several inches of silt which buried the grass peace path!

In 20 years here we have never seen such devastation as Debby caused in greater Batesville. Gravel roads rendered impassable, asphalt driveways lifted off, bridges destroyed. Water is a powerful force.

Juan & Rosie have stained the deck and it looks marvelous! Every bit as fabulous as I had hoped!

I’ve been buying an $8 bouquet of flowers every week at the grocery store and making little arrangements to set about! They always make me smile!
