I called Til’s Case Manager in December about the egregious behavior of the nurse
at her old facility. Her telling me I HAD to put Til in hospice within
24 hours or they would evict her? (illegal) Well, they had brought in a for profit
hospice willing to lie and say Til qualified because of her breast
cancer. Her oncologist disagreed. I had called to see if it would hurt
her to go off her cancer meds, which hospice would require.

The doctors nurse was so disturbed by my call that she talked to the oncology social
worker, who as it happened, knew Til many years ago as a co-worker (Til mentored her!). She called me and encouraged me to call Tils’ Case Manager
to tell her about it. I also told her about Til being found in depends
that were so overfull as to be near bursting (staff not toileting her
appropriately) and that she lost 10 pounds in a month – we think
possibly due to staff not cutting up her food as required. (uncut
chicken breast was seen a couple times by friends).
Then there was the UTI test we requested that didn’t get administered for a week, and the resulting RX was not picked up until both I and another friend confronted them about it a week after it was faxed to the facility.
LONG STORY BUT HAPPY ENDING! Case Manager initiated an adult protective services investigation. I am not privy to the report or it’s findings BUT Til’s friend was there to visit another person and found out that the entire Admin and nursing staff have been removed! I hope this will result in much improved care for all the other residents!

Also Til appears to be settling in quite happily to her new place, has made a couple friends there. Her friend Lorene (former manager at a non profit assisted living facility) is very impressed with the staff & care a the new Mem Care facility! Sadly Tils mind is fading very quickly. She doesn’t remember Lorene or Heather (when one leaves the room she says “Who was that?”) They had to phone me yesterday to talk to Til because she was was convinced I had died…
Alzheimers truly sucks. But at least we have peace of mind knowing Til is safe and being well cared for now!
